On air

Posted by East MobileBooth on June 13, 2005, from Charlottesville, Virginia

On our last day in Charlottesville, participant David and his wife, Caroline, excitedly returned to the booth to let us know they heard David and his dad, John, on the WVTU radio, thanks to StoryCorps. David is now a dad himself. Meet Conrad!

StoryCorps facilitator Brett spent many of his off-hours today playing chess and talking with these great folks. He’s going native–Charlottesville is great!

We were locked out of the booth two days ago, but luckily all of our interviews were done for the day. We found Gary Lettan, Custom Carpenter, who fashioned perfect little widgets out of stained Hickory to prevent further embarrassing lockouts. He also regaled us with a bawdy Irish lilted story about “The Lady of Charlottesville.”

We took an hour-long journey deep into farm country to the home of two StoryCorps participants for dinner. David and Jennifer and their two little ones provided a muchneeded home cooked meal.

Randy

WMRA, the Harrisonburg NPR station, has given us the best gift for our stay in Charlottesville: His name is Randy!

Randy, WMRA’s Director of Major and Planned Giving, has been parked outside the StoryBooth daily. He fields hundreds of questions by curious passersby who eye the Airstream and want details on the StoryCorps project. How will we move on to West Virginia without him? Thanks, WMRA and Randy.

Rain day

Posted by East MobileBooth on June 6, 2005, from Charlottesville, Virginia

We traveled to Goshen Pass, VA, to go swimming in a beautiful mountain creek. After about an hour of soaking in the creek, a summer thunderstorm forced us back to the truck. We drove two lane roads back to Charlottesville, getting pleasantly lost along the way.

Our location in Charlottesville is ideal. The MobileBooth sits right on the downtown mall, in front of the Mud House coffee bar. It feels like all of Charlottesville passes us by on a daily basis, including every breed of dog imaginable. This baby pit bull is one of our favorite regulars.

A/C woes

Posted by East MobileBooth on June 1, 2005, from Charlottesville, Virginia

An air conditioning problem left the back of the trailer a bit too steamy. Zac and Matt from headquarters were on-site and constructed this zany contraption to push cold air back. And it worked! (Well, kinda-sorta.) Thanks to Al and Jeff of Sentra Electricians for coming upwith a more permanent solution.
